Project thingy, that just sounds cooler than page or posts, but I also call it that because it is like a project. I left this blog and Instagram for dead sometime at the beginning of 2016 because I moved around for a few years. I just didn’t have the capacity to keep up with things. I tried a come back in 2019 and just wasn’t able to find the spark, and then 2020 everything came to a dead stop. Sad times indeed.

Thankfully, even in the most trying of times there have been people who hung on tight and rode the dead days of the music scene. It has been a slow and unsure awakening back into the realm of live music, but it is also a hopeful one. There have been a new crop of bands that have popped up in Sacramento which is nice to see. I think after the pandemic and the gentrification of downtown Sacramento many creatives who once called this town home, left. We have lost music venues, and have nearly become completely pushed out of downtown. It has certainly become apparent that it is harder and harder to find anywhere to play (and a band can’t keep playing the same venues over and over again), and with that I have also seen a healthy crop of house shows happening.
It really is a return to the underground for Sacramento music, and that is part of the inspiration for bring this blog back online. Along with the disappearance of venues, local news resources died off. Pre-pandemic there were two main stream news papers (Sac Bee don’t count, LOL) that would be able to reach the masses of Sacramento and share what was happening in the local music scene. Those included the Sacramento News & Review, and Submerge Magazine. They used to have these little boxes all around town where people could go and grab a free physical copy of their publication every week and we could read headline stories of bands, or even celebrate the music scene with the local Sammie awards (which was kind of dumb anyway, lol). Bands could also get a feature in them, or buy ad space to promote their new albums or upcoming shows. Ultimately, there was a way to reach more people, but now we are left to try and build resources on social media on our own.
Alas, Social media is what we have, and I am trying to fill a gigantic void by utilizing it even though it sucks that the platforms are all owned by billionaire bros. My hope with the SacIndieMusic Instagram project thingy is to try and create a place where people can converge and discover others in the music scene, and also remember the thriving scene of the past. I’ve set out on a mission of sorts to scour the depths of Instagram and share everything I come across related to local music shows, the photographers of the scene, the other locals sharing show information, and sharing venue information. All of that on top of the main point which is sharing who the active bands in the scene are, and the physical copies of the music created by current and past bands. So if you visit the Instagram project page you will see the music from my own personal collection. These are all albums from local bands that I have collected over the years, and also ones that I’ve recently brought into my collection. Documenting the past and present scene is not only important, but also fun because people can find new music to listen too, or remember ones from the past. Now just to note here, and before you go picking on me, my collection is not at all very large! I do not own everything everyone has ever created, LOL! At some point I suspect I will need to reach out to others to submit photos of what they own and help contribute to this project to keep it going.
Ultimately my goal is to try and help, and just be present as much as I can. I love music, and I love being involved in the local scene. I have met so many amazing people over the years, and have been able to do so many memorable things that will be a part of my life forever. A friend once called me a lifer, I guess he was right! I am also a big dork, so if you ever find out who I am, don’t be too disappointed, just telling you now, LOL!
Alright, enough of the mumbo jumbo, if you have photos of your local music collection that you would like to be featured on the SacIndieMusic Instagram Project thingy page, hit me up!!!! Send an email to: Sacindemusic@gmail.com and lets talk business!
Cheers!!!!
