This is what it seems, a desperate call for help from the community and to all music lovers! The local Sacramento music and arts community has lost ALL of its underground all-ages venues, and now the moment has come where our final stand, Café Colonial and the colony, are fighting to stay open.
There once was a time when our venues would close down, and a new one would spring up, but with the rising cost of rents and homogenization of our city, they have not returned. ZERO have returned, and the ones that might come back have been monopolized. To give some insight into the death toll of venues, here is a list of a few venues that have disappeared over the years:
Java lounge, Luigi’s fun garden (downtown Sacramento), R5 record store, the shine café, the naked lounge, the starlight lounge, the blue lamp, the press club, and, just a few weeks ago, the iconic Old Ironsides.
Our community needs help. This one little venue has been accepting of all of the most marginalized in our community. It has been a spot for people to celebrate and grieve, and it has been the MOST accessible venue to all local bands and underground touring bands looking for a place to book a show.
If you don’t know, the owners of the blue lamp came to the rescue of this venue because they understood how essential it is to the local music and arts community! They poured their heart and soul into this business and kept it going.
I am not an eloquent writer, and I wish I could convey how much we need this venue! If you can please donate even $5.00 to their gofundme fundraiser, it will mean the world to everyone who loves this place and who needs it.
Please help; we ALL have lost enough. Let’s unite as a community and help save the Café Colonial and The colony! If you can’t donate, go to a show, eat dinner here, or please consider sharing their fundraiser site!

“The Colonial complex is an integral part of the Sacramento artistic community, and I am truly scared to see what the city looks like without something like it. If you care for your community, if you care about art and culture in Sacramento, if you care about accessible all ages venues, this is a way to help us save the last true bastion of underground culture in Sacramento. Please help by donating what you can – there are thousands of people that call this place home. Please don’t let our home die.” – Cafe Colonial via the gofundme site
