
August has arrived and is ready to turn up the heat, but at least we can enjoy some fabulous music! There are some fantastic shows happening this month that you should know about, and we’ve got Seven of them to share with you! These gigs are celebrating album releases, single releases, festivals, and bands that haven’t played in a long time! Bands such as The Philharmonik, The Frenchmen, Gentleman Surfer, Monster Treasure, ghostplay, Vasas, Shower Breakfasts, and more!
The local Sacramento music scene is overflowing with incredible talent! There are so many shows that we can’t cover them all, so we’re sharing some of our favorites. This doesn’t mean the ones we missed aren’t excellent; we just want to highlight how much is happening in the underground music scene. There are some really great bands starting to blow up here! You’d be crazy not to catch at least one of these shows.

- The Philharmonik – Harlow’s, August 8th
Sacramento legend The Philharmonik just finished a national tour after winning NPR’s Tiny Desk, and now he will be playing on August 8th at Harlows to celebrate the album that started it all for him, Kironic. This is bound to be an epic celebration! Also on the bill are the phenomenal LabRats, who have been making a big splash in the local scene, Shower Breakfast with their lovely dream pop, and the mighty Bayokyo. It’s wonderful to see The Philharmonik including these fabulous local bands in his show. Btw quick to get tickets because by the time this is out it may already be sold out!!! Eeeeek!

2. Quinine – House Show, August 9th
A budding shoegaze scene is growing in the Bay Area and Sacramento! Cherub Dream Records has been churning out amazing new records, including the newest single by local band Quinine, who just dropped ‘Where Are You From’. They’ll be celebrating the release of their split vinyl with a new song by Bay Area band Welcome Strawberry. The show will be happening on August 9th at a house, so you have to hit up the bands to get in the know! Also on the bill are the fabulous Blous3 (they just dropped ann incredible new single called ‘Goo Goo”) and Portland’s IX of Swords. If shoegaze and screamo rock are your thing, don’t miss this one!

3. Ghostplay – Starlet Room, August 15th
ghostplay, who haven’t played in Sacramento in nearly a year and are heading off to Europe after this August 15th gig at the Starlet Room, is back with a new album called ‘Zelpha’, described by Post-Punk.com as an “existential collage of dream pop and experimental rock”. This album has been nine years n the making according to the band and is currently available on all digital streaming platforms. Joining them for this night are local favorites Desario, bringing their 90’s Britpop and shoegaze-inspired sounds, and Orionids, formerly known as Pilot Waves, who also recently played Concerts In the Park in downtown Sacramento. It should be a sonically haunting night of music!

4. Charles Albright Fest – Phono Select Records, August 17th
This local fest features a majorly stacked lineup, including the start of the show, the reunion of The Frenchmen, featuring Charles Albright, a Sacramento staple in the local music scene. They also just reissued their album ‘Sorry We Ruined Your Party’. It’s limited edition and you get get your copy here! Also on this fantastic lineup are Motorcycle, Monster Treasure, Yea-Ming and the Rumors, The Four Eyes, Reno Casinos, Knock Knock, the return of VASA, Whorefield, and RadioactiveHZ (RHZ)! It’s all happening on Saturday August 17th at Sacramento’s friendliest record store, Phono Select Records. Plus, if you buy tickets early, you’ll get free goodies like tapes, posters, and t-shirts. 5. Dead Energy – Golden Bear, August 25th
Dead Energy is traveling all the way from Seattle to play Sacramento’s tiniest and most awkwardly awesome stage at the Golden Bear! Dead Energy is an excellent psychedelic garage rock band. If you’re into local band The Snares, you might also dig them. Back in Seattle, they’ve gotten airplay on KEXP and opened for acts like Acid Mothers Temple. Check out their music on Bandcamp and don’t miss this rad gig! Opening the show will be two great local bands: emotive post-hardcore project Tovidence, who recently released a new single “Lying To”, and the talented indie rock act Güero.

6. The Snares – Cafe Colonial, August 30th
Speaking of The Snares, this band has been making Sacramento proud! They have played so many local shows and worked hard to build up a following that is now spilling over into the Bay Area, a feat that any local band would love to accomplish! They recently signed to Psyched Records in SF and will be playing venues like the Great American Music Hall. Even so, they haven’t forgotten about Sacramento and are coming back to play their single release show on August 30th at Cafe Colonial. They always put on a wicked good show, and their music is bound to make you sweat! Also on the bill are Spoon Benders and Milk for the Angry. It will be a great time, and we’re all excited to hear their new music! Plus the Cafe is just an all around cool place to see shows, the food there is epic as are the staff who run the place.

7. Gentleman Surfer – House Show, August 24th
It’s always a rare treat these days to see Gentleman Surfer playing gigs around town, and if you haven’t seen them in a while, now is your chance! They will be playing a house gig in Sacramento on August 24th, 2024. You’ll need to hit up front man Jon Bafus for all the details. Also on the bill are some pretty cool bands, including one all the way from Japan called The Wameki, and from San Francisco RIP Room! Jon also announced that a new Gentleman Surfer album is complete and will be released soon! It’s such a pleasure to hear that they are putting out new music and playing a gig. This is sure to be a great one!
