Sacramento’s underground music scene is thriving. While we’ve lost a few beloved venues and the mainstream public often remains unaware of the creative pulse beating beneath the surface, the city’s musicians continue to push forward. Despite limited exposure, the drive to create and share music remains strong. DIY spaces and local gatherings are keeping the spirit of live performance alive.
It’s no small feat to attempt to capture everything that’s been released from our vibrant scene, but we’re going to try. There are no favorites here, because every creative voice matters—whether they have thousands of Instagram likes, just a handful of Spotify streams, or have only ever released a single album. What counts is that they created and shared their music. It exists, and it contributes to the unique community we’re building in Sacramento. Now, it’s time for the world to listen. It’s like discovering there’s more to a city than the Taco Bells and Starbucks on every street corner. There’s a whole culture beyond the corporate chains—one that’s waiting to be discovered.
With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of standout releases from 2024. From the familiar to the unknown, this year’s music from Sacramento is divers and impressive. Bands like Coast Office, Bye Bye Mars, Killer Couture, MRS, Cockring, ghostplay, High Bias, Ditzy Spells, Mateo Briscoe, Rituals of Mine, In Retrograde, and Loose Choir have all contributed to making this year a remarkable one for Sacramento’s music scene.
